Restoring Old Books: Decipering an Old Sewing Pattern in the Binding
An interesting article Deciphering a Sewing Pattern from the Texas State Library and Archives Commission. When the topic of conservation and old books comes to mind, it often goes to how to piece an old book back together or restore it to its former glory. But how to do it when the bindings are sewn together?
The TSLAC found a pattern, and listed it on their blog. They found one book to be "supported, two-on smythe sewing". Included in their blog posting is a close-up of the book in question, and the drawn out template of the sewing structure.
Very interesting if you're into old books, and into sewing as well.
